Writing workshops

ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes scientific paper writing workshops

Level up your academic writing

Offered by CSIRO publishing

This workshop gives you the skills and confidence to write scientific papers for successful publication in leading scientific journals.

This is a 3-day in-person workshop.

You will:

  • Understand the culture of science publishing and why it is important to publish
  • Develop the skills required to write well-structured and easy-to-read scientific articles, including the ability to be precise, clear, concise and interesting
  • Create drafts or paragraphs and outlines of their academic writing
  • Apply writing, editing and time management techniques to their academic writing
  • Produce written material that leverages the insights into editorial decision-making and the peer-review process
  • Understand the protocols and ethics of scientific publication

This program is suitable for anyone wishing to improve the impact of their scientific publications. The workshop will benefit a person who has data to write about or a current draft they wish to publish.

The next workshop will be held at the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Melbourne, Tuesday October 24 – Thursday 26 October, 2023 (Note, the dates have been updated from the initial email)

For those interested in the paper writing workshop, JB is also seeking expressions of interest for a Media and Communications Training on Friday 27 October in Melbourne. (You can be booked for the same trip) These are conducted at a real TV and radio/podcast studio – and we specifically encourage anyone who is shy or nervous about communicating their research – it’s a safe and comfortable environment and fun, we promise!

Express interest by emailing jb.brown@unsw.edu.au – as JB needs expressions of interest earlier than the writing workshop.

Applications close August 31st, 2023.

The workshop is open to all centre students and early career researchers. If oversubscribed preference will be given to PhD students near the end of their candidature.

There is central funding support available for Centre students and postdocs who need to travel to attend the workshop, please indicate on the application if you require support for travel and/or accommodation.

Please click here to register. As part of the registration process you will be asked to upload a brief description (half page max.) of any research outputs – published, in review, or in progress (.docx or .pdf).
